China conducted the inaugural flight of a new fighter jet, as shown in images recently posted on Chinese social media.

According to Defence Blog, the aircraft prototype was spotted during pre-flight preparations and later in the air, marking its debut in the expanding aviation program of the People’s Liberation Army Navy.

The jet, produced by the Hongdu Aviation Industry Group (HAIG), features design elements adapted for naval operations, including twin engines, a reinforced landing gear system, and two canted vertical stabilizers.

Its overall layout closely resembles the American Boeing T-7A Red Hawk, but the new Chinese jet incorporates adaptations for carrier operations, such as a dual nose wheel and structural modifications suitable for arrested landings and catapult launches.

In a 2023 patent application, the aircraft was designated as a “twin-tail jet with side air intakes.” The technical illustrations show a dual cockpit and prominent air intakes, consistent with naval aviation requirements.

According to analysts, the aircraft is being developed as a universal platform for training naval aviators and potentially as a basis for future light combat or patrol variants capable of air-to-air interception and ground-attack missions.

The prototype aligns with an apparent Chinese push to modernize its military aircraft fleet. Additionally, China’s continued investment in naval aviation suggests a long-term strategy to expand its blue-water operational capabilities and reduce reliance on imported or modified land-based systems.
